Making healthy decisions is important, but it’s taking those decisions and developing them into lifelong habits that will truly transform your life. Here are some tips to create lifelong healthy habits!
Think about your why.
Creating new habits can be difficult at first, especially when you’re working to change behaviors you’ve had for years. That’s why it’s so important to keep your reasons for wanting to change at the forefront of your mind. To stay on-track, write down your why statement and keep it somewhere you’ll see it on a regular basis so you can reflect on it when you encounter obstacles!
Make them manageable.
The key to creating habits that will last is making them manageable. If you try to make huge changes all at once, you may bite off more than you can chew and end up giving up on them entirely.
Instead, focus on making changes that are manageable. Rather than working out two hours every day with no rest days, build an exercise habit by finding a workout you love and working out a few times each week. Rather than trying to make complicated dinners for yourself every night of the week, do some meal prep and embrace easy, healthy recipes. By keeping your healthy choices manageable, you’ll have a much easier time maintaining them long-term.
One of the biggest obstacles to changing your lifestyle is your own mindset. If you think of healthy decisions as chores that you’re forcing yourself to do, it’s going to be harder to stay committed to them. But if you think of healthy habits as decisions you’re making to enhance the quality of your life, you’ll have a much easier time.
Let’s take healthy eating, for example. If you go in thinking “I can’t have this” and “I can’t have that,” you’re putting yourself in the mindset that you’re being deprived. But if you go in thinking “I’m making changes to improve my health, so I’ll save my indulgences for my next Free Meal,” you’re putting yourself in the mindset that you’re in control and you’re making healthy decisions because they’re good for you. It’s a simple shift in thinking, but it can make a big difference!
