Most people focus solely on how their diet can affect their physical health, but it can also impact your emotional health. Today, we’re going to discuss how your diet affects your mood!
How Your Diet Affects Your Mood
Food may be, at its most basic level, fuel, but what you choose to eat has a big impact on your physical and emotional health. And it probably won’t surprise you that the foods that are best for your mood are the same foods that are best for your physical health: lean protein, complex carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats.
Let’s look at some research. This study suggests that eating more fruits and vegetables is associated with lower risk of depression and anxiety, and this study showed improved mood with increased fruit and vegetable consumption not just for one day, but for the next day as well. Research also suggests that a healthy, high-quality diet may have positive effects on mood regulation. All of this suggests that what you eat doesn’t just impact your physical health—it affects your emotional health.
In addition to the research above, there’s a lot to be said for the mindset that you create when you choose healthy foods. You feel much better when you know you’re giving your body the high-quality nutrients that it needs to function at its best!
How Your Mood Affects Your Diet
Of course, your emotions can also impact the way you eat. Emotional eating is a real thing! Anger, stress, anxiety, loneliness, boredom, and sadness can all lead you to turn to unhealthy foods as a coping mechanism.
If this is something you struggle with, practice taking the time to consider whether or not you’re physically hungry. Emotional hunger tends to present itself suddenly, includes specific cravings (especially for comfort foods), and isn’t satisfied once you’re full. When you experience it, try to process your emotions rather than turning to food. Doing so will be much better for you not just physically, but emotionally as well.
