Choosing Your Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are important for your health, but the kind of carbs that you choose makes a big difference. Carbohydrates fall into two basic categories: simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates.

Simple carbohydrates are quickly broken down into sugar in your body, so they don’t provide long-lasting energy. They’re also usually deficient in other nutrients, such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Common examples of simple carbohydrates include white bread, candy, and soda.

Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, are absorbed more slowly in your body, so the energy they provide lasts longer. They’re also less refined than simple carbohydrates and tend to have more nutritional value. Common examples are whole-grain bread and pasta, quinoa, sweet potatoes, and brown rice.

Because complex carbohydrates offer longer-lasting energy and more nutrients, choosing them most of the time is a great way to work toward optimal health. But you don’t need to cut out simple carbohydrates entirely. Simple carbohydrates are found in many healthy foods, including fruits and dairy products! But cutting back on sources of simple carbohydrates that are nutrient-deficient, such as soda, candy, cookies, and cake, can have a powerful impact on your health.
